Foxhole AFC 2 - 1 St Austell
Saturday 3rd April 2010

Two brilliant first-half goals from Richard Griffin earned a shock, but deserved, victory over high-flying opponents who, while creating far more scoring opportunities, were generally knocked off their stride by the superbly committed Foxes. It may have been a different story had Body converted either of two early chances, first when meeting Brokenshire's inviting centre only to be denied by the legs of Holland, and then firing wildly over following an error by Lawrence, standing in for the injured Mackellar. However, with the gale behind them, Foxhole soon recognised the potential of the visitors' unconvincing offside trap, and, after a number of close calls, Griffin raced on to the impressive Kempthorne's pass to rifle high into the net on twenty-four minutes. St Austell were stung into action, and, in a heart-stopping two minute spell, may have found the target three times as the home goal led a charmed life - Brokenshire's free-kick was deflected wide, Giles' fierce cross was met by the stretching Body only for Bird to bundle the ball away, before Brokenshire's shot on the turn flashed just wide. Having somehow survived, Foxhole then incredibly doubled their advantage when Griffin spotted Penhaligon off his line and brilliantly chipped the keeper from 35 yards ten minutes before the break. The dangerous Nancarrow's target-play continued to be a concern, but Carpenter stuck manfully to his marking task, and allowed the much-travelled front man only one sight of goal, Holland again saving well.

The second-half resembled a frantic game of attack against defence, as the wind blew ever stronger and the temperature dropped, with the Foxes defending for their lives, and St Austell lacking the composure to capitalise on a series of gilt-edged chances. Consequently, the visitors had only Penhaligon's 66th minute fifty-yard fluke to show for their incessant pressure, his free-kick awarded against the industrious Pinhammer dipping viciously past Holland's palm. Tinsley saw an attempt fielded, Brokenshire came close both with an angled drive and a set-piece, Lean thundered a header against the bar from virtually underneath it, before Holland had to be at his best to deny first Body, and then Wheildon, with efforts from the edge of the box. Griffin had typically been walking a disciplinary tight-rope for some time before eventually finding his way into referee Hoon's notebook for playing on after the whistle once too often, and he was soon joined by the gloriously pugnacious Hazeldine following a foul on Lean. For pantomime-villain Giles' appalling first-half challenge on Pinhammer to go unpunished without even a quiet word defied belief, so his late caution for another poor tackle on Bird offered some gratification to the home faithful, who could barely watch as Nancarrow contrived to squander two more openings during protracted stoppage-time. An equaliser, however, would have been excessively cruel on the magnificently resilient Foxes.
