Penryn Athletic 2 - 0 Foxhole AFC
Wednesday 7th April 2010

Kernick Road continues to be a bogey ground for depleted Foxhole as, for the third season running, they undeservedly came away with nothing to show for another battling performance against the odds. While Penryn enjoyed the majority of the possession playing down the slope in the first half, the visiting defence, despite missing Mackellar, Johns, Lawrence and Carpenter, dealt relatively comfortably with attacks invariably centring around Band. Thirkle almost made Adam Holland pay for a wayward pass on twenty minutes, but his effort fizzed narrowly wide, Hobbs may on another day have elected to head Maclean's cross towards goal rather than try to tee up Shaughnessy, who soon tested Ryan Holland with a fierce drive, and Johnstone and Howlett each ought to have done better from close-range, but the Foxes showed admirable resilience to reach the break all square.

Regrettably, within five minutes of the restart, Penryn had scored twice. Thirkle broke down the left to find the largely anonymous Hobbs who produced a fine finish from the edge of the box, followed almost immediately by the rampaging Johnstone following up after Howlett's shot had been blocked. With Saturday's hero Griffin having been a late withdrawal, it was difficult to see where three goals were going to come from but Foxhole made a decent fist of staging a dramatic recovery, and had Penryn on the ropes for most of the remainder of the match. Alas, both that killer touch and the rub of the green were absent as Nicholls saw a header from Rowe's flick saved, debutant Sleeman volleyed just too high at the far-post from Bird's tantalising centre, Kenny's thunderous attempt was tipped over, and Pinhammer's inswinging corner crashed against the woodwork with Raven beaten. Although Band twice went close in rare counter-attacks, Foxhole, inspired by the excellent Ansell, continued on the offensive with some neat inter-play. Late on, both Faircloth and the impressive Kempthorne were unfortunate to watch shots flash past the post as the Foxes strived in vain for the point their commitment warranted.
